SUMMARY:LRG Webcast: GI Stromal Tumors
DESCRIPTION:GI Stromal Tumors: A PatholoGIST’s Point of View – Mutational Testing in GIST\nLISTEN TO THE WEBCAST\n\nMutational Testing in GIST is a vital component for survival\, especially as cancer treatment becomes more individualized. In this webcast\, Dr. Chris Corless\, Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories at OHSU\, demystifies the process by which pathologists make the diagnosis of GIST and assess the risk of recurrence. Dr. Corless will discuss how tumor DNA is extracted and analyzed from these tumors\, and how mutations detected in tumor DNA influences treatment decisions.\n\nThere will be a 15 minute Q & A at the end of his presentation.\n\nAbout the Presenter:\n\n\nAfter undergraduate studies at the Univ. of California\, Berkeley\, Dr. Corless received his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University\, St. Louis. He did his residency training in Anatomic Pathology at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital\, Boston\, where he also completed fellowship training in GI Pathology and GU Pathology. He joined the faculty of Oregon Health & Science University in 1994 and was promoted to Professor in 2004. During his career he has served as the residency program director in Pathology and medical director of surgical pathology for OHSU Hospital. He is presently the Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories at OHSU. An author on over 260 publications\, Dr. Corless has expertise in the application of molecular diagnostics to the classification and prognostication of solid tumors. \n\n\nTechnical Tips to Join Meeting:\n\nThis is a web only meeting\, accessed only by your internet connection. Participants are encouraged to use the web link automatically provided after registration and to use computer speakers (and/or headsets if available) to hear the audio portion of the meeting. SUMMARY:GIST Day of Learning - Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:GIST Sarcoma Life Raft Group Canada is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the GIST Day of Learning in Vancouver.  This is a one-day conference that provides education and support for people who have GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour)\, which is a soft-tissue sarcoma that can occur anywhere along the GI tract.  The Day of Learning will cover many aspects of living with and understanding GIST and provide an update on investigational new drugs being evaluated in clinical trials for GIST.  It will also provide a great opportunity to connect with other GIST patients\, caregivers and the presenters. \nThe Day of Learning is open to people who have GIST\,  family members\,  caregivers\, healthcare providers and anyone who wishes to learn more about GIST. There is no charge for attending the GIST Day of Learning. \n\nAgenda\nMorning Sessions\nThe Biology of GIST: What Every Patient Needs to Know\nDavid Josephy\, LRGC President \nYour GIST Journey – A Round-Table Discussion\nHazel McLeod\, LRGC Director \nAfternoon Sessions\nClinical Management of GIST\nXiaolan Feng\, MD\, BC Cancer \nDevelopment of the Next Generation of GIST Treatments\nMichael Heinrich\, MD\, Knight Cancer Institute\, Oregon Health and Science University \n\nOur keynote speaker is Dr. Michael Heinrich\nDr. Heinrich earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed both his residency training and fellowship in hematology/medical oncology at Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU). Dr. Heinrich’s research\, like much of the work at the Knight Cancer Institute\, revolves around a basic\, yet complex premise. You have to understand what is broken in order to fix it. That’s why Dr. Heinrich is intently focused on identifying the molecular targets that cause cancer\, which is essential to the development of better and less toxic therapies. He is recognized internationally for groundbreaking research discoveries that have improved care for patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors\, and his research has implications for many types of cancer. \nThis all-day conference will include: \n\n6 educational sessions including Q & A\nLots of opportunity to mix and mingle\nContinental breakfast\, lunch and refreshments\n\nREGISTER HERE \nWhen:\nSaturday April 27\, 2019\n9:00 am – 4:00 pm\n(Doors open at 8:15) \nWhere:\nBest Western Chateau Granville Hotel\n1100 Granville St\,\nVancouver\, BC  V6Z 2B6 \nQuestions?\nContact Malcolm Sutherland\nmalcolm.sutherland@liferaftgroup.ca \n855-574-4478 \n
