Dr. Heinrich’s research\, like much of the work at the Knight Cancer Institute\, revolves around a basic\, yet complex premise. You have to understand what is broken in order to fix it. DESCRIPTION:GI Stromal Tumors: A PatholoGIST’s Point of View – Mutational Testing in GIST\nLISTEN TO THE WEBCAST\n\nMutational Testing in GIST is a vital component for survival\, especially as cancer treatment becomes more individualized. In this webcast\, Dr. Chris Corless\, Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories at OHSU\, demystifies the process by which pathologists make the diagnosis of GIST and assess the risk of recurrence. Dr. Corless will discuss how tumor DNA is extracted and analyzed from these tumors\, and how mutations detected in tumor DNA influences treatment decisions.\n\nThere will be a 15 minute Q & A at the end of his presentation.\n\nAbout the Presenter:\n\n\nAfter undergraduate studies at the Univ. of California\, Berkeley\, Dr. Corless received his MD and PhD degrees from Washington University\, St. Louis. He did his residency training in Anatomic Pathology at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital\, Boston\, where he also completed fellowship training in GI Pathology and GU Pathology. He joined the faculty of Oregon Health & Science University in 1994 and was promoted to Professor in 2004. During his career he has served as the residency program director in Pathology and medical director of surgical pathology for OHSU Hospital. He is presently the Director and Chief Medical Officer of the Knight Diagnostic Laboratories at OHSU. DESCRIPTION:RegisterBook A Hotel\nLife Fest is a unique event where hundreds of patients and caregivers come together for a weekend to interact with each other and the medical and scientific communities that serve them. Faced with a rare form of cancer\, GIST patients have a great need for information about this disease\, particularly as the science evolves and our understanding reveals a complex set of subtypes of GIST\, each responding differently to available treatments. Each year brings a wealth of new information\, and patients are eager to learn about the latest treatments. \nLife Fest workshops provide patients with emerging medical information\, and they come away with a deeper knowledge of the disease\, treatments and side effect management. They find hope in knowing the scientific community is working toward a cure\, and hope is such a vital asset as they struggle day by day for survival. Life Fest Agenda 2018 \nThe Life Raft Group emerged in recognition of the tremendous need for support in the GIST community. Life Fest 2018 will provide patients and caregivers with that support. Coming together with fellow patients from all walks of life from around the world is a meaningful and powerful experience. \nIn addition to our traditional educational workshops\, Life Fest 2018 will feature scientific presentations highlighting the newest research and the latest treatments. Additionally\, other disease advocacy groups will be invited to present the work of their organizations\, and share lessons learned. \nScholarship/financial assistance will be available to those who can’t afford to participate in Life Fest.
