Pediatric GISTer Will Test His Mettle in Marine Corps Marathon

One of those things is to run a marathon. At the Battle of Marathon, the legend of the runner Pheidippides was born, as his running from Marathon to Athens declaring "We are victorious" and dying of exhaustion immediately. It was hailed as the farthest a man could run before he died.

Furthering research through the NIH Pediatric GIST clinic

From June 15 through June 17, 2011, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) hosted the seventh annual Pediatric and wildtype GIST Clinic. Ten patients from across the United States and Canada attended, accompanied by family members or friends. In total, 80 patients have participated in the NIH Pediatric GIST Clinic, 75 of whom have wildtype GIST. Thirty-five percent of patients have pediatric GIST, currently defined as diagnosis before the age of 19.

Dating with GIST: the who, what, when and just plain how? (Part 2)

The perilous world of dating can become even more complicated when you are living with cancer. This article is the second in a two part series on dating with a diagnosis of GIST. Part one, which was published in the February 2011 issue of the LRG newsletter featured experiences from three GIST survivors, Jason DeLorenzo, Eric Tan & Estelle Lecointe on the difficulties approaching the subject of GIST while dating. CTOS 2009 Reports: Adult & Pediatric GIST

This presentation at the 2009 Connective Tissue Oncology Society meeting by Dr. Jonathan Trent offered several new observations for patients on imatinib. One hundred forty-two GIST patients underwent therapeutic drug monitoring from May 2008 to September 2009 at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Imatinib blood plasma levels were measured and minimum concentration or trough levels were calculated. Patient response was also tracked as part of this retrospective, observational study, which included both those with advanced GIST and those receiving adjuvant imatinib (approx. 20%).
