We recently posted an article about what not to say to a cancer patient. Elana Miller, cancer survivor and physician has compiled a list of positive actions that can help friends or loved ones who are diagnosed with cancer.

For those newly diagnosed or those further into their treatment, having a friend anticipate their needs provides welcome support. Instead of asking what they need, this article gives a list of forty four things that can help make the lives of cancer patients easier. We’ve highlighted four things that you can do to make a difference.

  1. Let them Know they Are Not Alone – Tell them you are there for them and that you love and care for them. These simple words can make all the difference.
  2. Lend a Helping Hand – Offer to help them around the house or run errands for them. Cancer patients get tired and a helping had can go a long way to making their day.
  3. Talk to Them – Talk to them about anything other than their cancer. It is important to take their mind off of their treatment. Let them know you are always there for them to talk and/or vent.
  4. Go to the Movies – Another great way to take their mind off of their treatment is to go to the movies. If you don’t like movies go see a concert, play or even go to the park.
